Grandad Colin Moore hopes to ride into history as the oldest winning jockey in the world – aged 81.

He said it would be “pretty special” to write his name in the record books more than 60 years after riding his first winner. Moore is on Daranova against nine others in the Newmarket Town Plate on Saturday (August 26) – a marathon flat race of three-and-a-half miles for amateurs.

Despite his advancing years the grandad-of-three believes he is in the best shape ever to beat a 100-year-old record, that belongs to Harry Beasley who, at 71, became the world’s oldest winning jockey at Punchestown, Ireland, in 1923.

The 81-year-old, who hails from Walcot Lees, Shropshire, has only ever ridden one winner, a 50-1 shot as a jump jockey at Worcester back in 1961.

Having first been established by King Charles II, the Newmarket Town Plate has been run at the home of horse racing since 1666. And it was King Charles who claimed the first ever running of the Town Plate too, making him the first and only member of the Royal Family to win a race.

The 2023 edition of the historic race will be Newmarket's 353rd, with Charles also claimed to have stated he wanted the Plate to run "forever".

And should Moore manage to claim victory at Newmarket a top Daranova, then he could ride into rather esteemed company, as well as the history books.
