Matheus Nunes’ move to Manchester City was seemingly confirmed after Sunday’s narrow victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Rodri’s late winner secured all three points for City after Erling Haaland’s opener had been cancelled out by Blades right-back Jayden Bogle.

City had been in the headlines before kick-off over a potential move for Wolves midfielder Nunes, who is thought to be a target for the defending Premier League champions. An initial £47million bid was reportedly turned down last week but City look set to return with an improved offer before Friday’s deadline.

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha appeared to confirm Nunes’ exit on Sunday afternoon by posting an emotional tribute to his team-mate on Instagram. He shared a photo of himself planting a kiss on Nunes’ cheek alongside a caption which hinted that a move to City could be imminent.

Written in Portuguese, the caption reads: “My brother! May God bless you a lot, thank you for all the moments of partnership since I arrived! I love you brother!”

Pep Guardiola is known to be a huge admirer of the midfielder and sung his praises last year by saying: “I would say that Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today.”

Meanwhile, Wolves boss Gary O’Neil admitted earlier this week that Nunes could leave the club before Friday’s deadline, saying that he can understand why the 25-year-old might want to move.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He understands the club’s stance, he’s part of the group until he isn’t. I’d have loved to have had him available [at Everton], he’d have been fine.

“He’s a focused boy who understands so I’d much rather have him available than not. I’m 100 per cent sure if Matheus is here at the end of the window, which I hope he is, he’ll be an important part of the group.”

Nunes was suspended for Wolves’ victory over Everton on Saturday after being sent off against Brighton a week earlier. He has made 41 appearances in all competitions since joining Wolves last summer, scoring one goal and grabbing one assist in the process.

Want the latest Premier League news as we publish it on Express Sport?
