Max Verstappen extended his lead at the top of the F1 Drivers’ Championship standings at the weekend as he won his ninth consecutive race at the Dutch Grand Prix. The blockbuster star is now 138 points ahead of Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez at the top of the F1 leaderboard and is on course to win his third title in a row.

Verstappen had to work hard for his latest victory in wet conditions after falling behind Perez early on. But the 25-year-old soon returned to the front and kept his composure late on when heavy rain caused a red flag and a 45-minute delay.

Verstappen will be looking to win a record 10th consecutive race at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend, with his form this season suggesting he could blow his rivals out of the water once again.

Ahead of the race, Johnny Herbert has said he’s worried that Red Bull only want to dominate F1 and has suggested that Verstappen is bored of getting the better of Perez. Meanwhile, Martin Brundle has been forced to deny being stoned during an exchange on social media platform X.

The Austrian team won their first Constructors’ Championship for nine years last time around, with star driver Max Verstappen is on course for a third consecutive F1 title.

Speaking to CasinoSite.nl, Herbert explained: “Christian Horner has made it clear that Red Bull have no intention of letting up and not dominating the sport. That worries me. That is a mentality I understand but from the racing point of view, it is not a good thing if all they want to do is dominate.

“We want to make the sport better. I would have thought Max is probably bored out of his skull. It is lovely winning and dominating but it is not challenging. And Max is the type of character that wants to be challenged. No-one is able to do that.”

George Russell has urged F1 chiefs to scrap the extreme wet tyres after branding them a “complete waste of time” following the Dutch Grand Prix. The race at Zandvoort was delayed for around 40 minutes due to a torrential downpour, with Red Bull ace Max Verstappen eventually crossing the chequered flag in first position.

“The intermediate choice was the right one,” explained Russell, who failed to finish the race after picking up a late puncture. “That was purely done because the pit lane’s too narrow and they knew that everybody would be peeling in from extreme to the inters.

“That extreme tyre is a complete waste of time at the moment and I think it should just be parked. If the conditions are too wet for intermediates, they [should] enforce that we just have to wait until the conditions get better.”

Good morning and welcome to Express Sport’s live F1 blog.
