Robert Sanchez's start to life as Chelsea's No. 1 has taken a embarrassing turn after he conceded an early penalty against AFC Wimbledon.

The Blues faced the League Two side at Stamford Bridge for a place in the EFL Cup third round, but found themselves behind after just 19 minutes.

Sanchez was totally at fault for the penalty, having come off for his line to catch a wayward through ball only to miss it completely and flatten AFC Wimbledon's Harry Pell.

Referee Tony Harrington immediately pointed to the spot and Dons midfielder James Tilley stepped up and smashed the resulting penalty home by blasting the ball down the middle.

Angry Blues fans swarmed to social media to hit out at the Spanish keeper, with one describing him as "a disaster waiting to happen".

"Thanks for your service Robert Sanchez, won't be needing you going forward. Possibly the worst keeper in the last 25 years," one supporter fumed.

"Just seen Robert Sanchez punch a player in the head and concede a pen. What a world," another said, while a third added: "Sanchez making Kepa looking like a safe pair of hands. What a world."

Some were even calling for Sanchez to be dropped for new signing Djordje Petrovic, who arrived from MLS side New England Revolution last week.

"We must start Petrovic against Forest at the weekend. I'm sick of having unreliable goalkeepers," one person wrote.

Petrovic, 23, was parachuted in following Kepa's loan move to Real Madrid, with Chelsea parting with a reported £12.5million to land the Serbian youngster.

Chelsea FC

League Cup

AFC Wimbledon FC

Footballblog

Source: Read Full Article

Bookmark For the latest from the pitch sign up for our football newsletter Thank you for subscribing!
