Caroline Garcia issued a statement after crashing out of the US Open on Tuesday. The seventh seed didn’t turn up for her post-match press conference and has now confirmed that she learned of her grandmother’s death on Monday. Garcia has now withdrawn from the women’s doubles event in New York.<\/p>\n
Garcia became one of many seeds to suffer an upset in the first round of the US Open as she lost to qualifier Wang Yafan on Tuesday. The Chinese star needed just 70 minutes to send the seventh seed packing 6-4 6-1.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was another tough loss for the Frenchwoman, who also lost her opening matches in Washington, Canada and Cincinnati. There was some confusion when the 29-year-old failed to turn up to her press conference after Tuesday’s loss and she has now confirmed that it is because she is dealing with the death of her grandmother.<\/p>\n
Garcia issued a statement on Wednesday confirming the heartbreaking news. “Hi everyone, these last 2 days have been very difficult for our family. My grandmother passed away on Monday afternoon,” the world No 7 wrote.<\/p>\n
