Lewis Hamilton has been handed two penalty points on his license for his involvement in the crash between his Mercedes and McLaren’s star rookie Oscar Piastri at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.

The seven-time world champion was making his way back through the field on the alternative strategy when he came across the McLaren of Piastri on the run down to turn one.

Hamilton moved to the outside at the opening chicane to set up a move on the inside through the Curva Grande and into the Variante della Roggia corner complex, putting him in a strong position to get the move done.

Unfortunately for the duo, Hamilton moved too aggressively to the right to close off Piastri’s line with the McLaren’s front left tyre making contact with the Brit’s right rear, sending both drivers into the run-off area.
