The fastest goal in English football history has been scored after just 2.52 seconds.

Jack Lyons’ screamer for Rusthall FC came immediately after the referee blew his whistle on Monday night in an FA Youth Cup preliminary round clash with Chatham Town. The talented youngster went on to bag a hat-trick, but it was his opener that etched his name in the record books.

A viral clip posted on social media shows players from both sides eagerly anticipating kick-off. Before the referee blows to signal the start of the game, Lyons can already be seen in close proximity to the ball.

He then begins his run-up, striking it goal-wards before anyone has had time to react. The Chatham Town keeper can be seen scurrying back to his goal-line, before being beaten by the looping ball.

The incredible strike unsurprisingly received plenty of attention from fans on Twitter, who marvelled at both the audacity and technique required to pull it off. And it led to some debate over whether it was in fact the fastest goal in history.

One Twitter user wrote: “First touch of the ball. First attempt in goal. First shot on target. That’s a quality goal. Some ambition to try it from the kick off.”

Meanwhile, another fan speculated: “How’s it not THE fastest?”

Lyons’ strike crossed the goal-line 2.52 seconds after the first contact with the ball, giving him the hugely impressive feat of scoring the fastest goal in any FA Cup competition.

The record was previously held by Gareth Morris, who scored in the FA Cup’s senior format in 2001 for Ashton United. Morris found the net with his 60-yard effort after just four seconds against Skelmersdale United.

Yet Lyons’ goal will only go down as the third fastest scored overall in the history of the game. The honour belongs to Gavin Stokes, who scored after a mind-boggling 2.1 seconds in the West of Scotland Super League First Division back in 2017.
