Manchester United legend Andy Cole believes the Jadon Sancho saga could end in a similar way to Paul Pogba’s time at the club. But the former Red Devils striker has pointed the finger at Erik ten Hag for releasing the story to the public and questioned his old club’s transfer strategy.

Ten Hag revealed after Sunday’s loss at Arsenal that Sancho had been left out due to his performance in training leading up to the game. The winger responded on social media with a lengthy statement where he said he no longer wants to be the scapegoat.

Sancho now has a difficult task to win back the trust of his manager and earn a spot back in his side. Cole won five Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at United.

He claims his former boss would never tell the media if he had a problem with a player. Cole says Ten Hag has made the situation far worse by making it public knowledge that he is not happy with Sancho.

More info

Cole told Betfred: “If Sir Alex Ferguson ever had a problem with a player, it didn’t leave the dressing room. So you can argue that Erik ten Hag has come out and said something negative about his player and he didn’t have to do that.

“If he didn’t say anything, then nobody’s getting wind of this situation. However, now he’s made the situation public, Jadon has now come out to defend himself.

“Manchester United haven’t started the season in a good way and Erik ten Hag didn’t need to create another distraction that the club doesn’t need. It just didn’t need to happen.”

Pogba was often the scapegoat for United’s performances throughout his time at the club. The £89million midfielder didn’t see eye-to-eye with Jose Mourinho, among others, during his second spell.

Don’t miss… Cole has compared Sancho’s situation to the France midfielder and says question marks must be raised about United’s recruitment, led by football director John Murtough, if another high-profile signing fails to pay off. He added: “Using Paul Pogba as an example, the media and the fans always reflect on whether they believe a player’s arrogant or believes that they’re better than they actually are.

“However, a club with the stature of Manchester United buys a player because they believe they’re one of the best players in the world and they’re going to improve their team and they bought Jadon Sancho because they believe he’s a really good player. If it doesn’t work out for Jadon at Manchester United, then why didn’t it work out?

“Is it just down to the player or is it down to the football club as well? Manchester United have made a number of marquee signings that haven’t worked out, so why does this keep happening?”

Man Utd players' feelings towards Jadon Sancho after latest Erik ten Hag spat
