Ryan Giggs is seemingly backing Sheikh Jassim to be the next owner of Manchester United. The legendary former winger has set out clear demands for what needs to be done once a takeover is completed.

Qatari billionaire Sheikh Jassim is still lodged in a battle with INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe to buy United. However, current Red Devils owners the Glazers are yet to accept an offer following several rounds of bidding earlier this year.

It has been 10 months since United was put up for sale. Sheikh Jassim’s proposal is a complete takeover which would see the Glazers leave completely, while Ratcliffe would look to become a majority shareholder and allow the current owners to stay in some capacity.

Giggs believes the right new owner would be the candidate willing to make the most change at United. He therefore is edging towards believing Sheikh Jassim is the right option.

Giggs told the Webby & O’Neil YouTube channel: “It’s the one who’s going to make a difference, the one who’s going to put in significant investment. From the outside, it looks like Sheikh Jassim who’s going to put the most money in, who’s going to own it 100 per cent.

You need everything.

“If things weren’t too bad on the pitch, if we were winning games, winning trophies, then you could probably get away with it. But we’re not winning games, we’re not winning trophies and it’s just an added pressure for the manager, for the players, with lots of outside noise.”

In his first interview since being cleared of domestic abuse charges, Giggs has also outlined the job off the pitch that a new owner faces. The Welshman admits both Old Trafford and their Carrington training ground are in need of major refurbishment.

Giggs added: “For me, it’s the best ground in the world. So let’s get up to the standard of other teams, other clubs, in the rest of the world.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Preferably, I would like the ground to stay as it is.

“But if that’s the best thing to do [knock it down and rebuild it], then, yeah. But from an emotional point of view, from playing, being a fan, you’d like Old Trafford to stay as it is and be improved.

“But if that isn’t possible, to bring it up to the standards of Tottenham and other stadiums around the world – I know Real Madrid have done theirs, as it stands. Who else has done that? I think they’ve done it with San Siro – so that would be my first option – to have it as it is, but improve it, because we need to be the best.

“We need to be the best ground, have the best playing staff and the best training ground. At the moment, that’s not the case.”
