Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk\u00a0has been banned for an additional match and fined \u00a3100,000 for using ‘abusive and insulting’ language towards referee John Brooks, the Football Association confirmed in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n
The centre-half, who is currently on international duty with the Netherlands, missed Liverpool’s Premier League win over Aston Villa last weekend after receiving a red card against Newcastle in August.<\/p>\n
Mail Sport reported in the wake of Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Newcastle that Van Dijk risked further punishment after appearing to berate the referee\u2019s decision to send him off, labelling the decision as a \u2018f***ing joke\u2019.<\/p>\n
The FA released a statement on Friday and issued the Dutchman a further one-match suspension, forcing him to sit out against Wolves on September 16.<\/p>\n
The governing body said: ‘Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for one match and fined \u00a3100,000 for breaching FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool\u2019s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Sunday 27 August.<\/p>\n
‘The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission.<\/p>\n
‘Full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.’<\/p>\n
Liverpool, who were 1-0 behind when Van Dijk was given his marching orders, came back to win thanks to two late goals from substitute Darwin Nunez.<\/p>\n
The Reds kept a clean sheet in Van Dijk’s absence against Aston Villa last weekend, winning 3-0 with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip at the heart of defence.\u00a0<\/p>\n
