Gareth Southgate has admitted England are looking at Newcastle’s highly-rated midfielder Elliot Anderson.

The Magpies man was born in England but has featured for Scotland at youth level. Anderson, 20, pulled out of Scotland’s squad for this international break citing an injury and he is still yet to earn a senior cap.

He switched his allegiances to England in 2021 when he featured for the U19s having previously played for Scotland’s youth sides. But he switched back to the Tartan Army last year when he played for their U21s and his senior future remains in doubt.

Southgate said: "We liked him and we do like him. We think he’s a player that’s doing really well.

"Obviously, he was called into their squad earlier in the week and I don’t know what the position is at the moment. I saw he’s pulled out. He’s definitely a player we like."

But there will be no chance of England trying to entice Evan Ferguson to play for the Three Lions. The Ireland striker has played six senior games for his country and despite confusion over his eligibility given he’s played three competitive games.

But it is understood that he cannot switch now and the Irish-born striker has never had any intention of playing for England.

Southgate said: "I think he’s played too many games at senior level, I think he’s got eight [six] caps now.

"I’m not exactly sure on whether he definitely can’t, but I think he’s made it very clear he feels he was born in Ireland and he’s represented them.

"I think he’s a bloody good player. We have to respect him, I don’t think he’s given any inkling that would be any different."
