Collingwood captain Darcy Moore has his hand in a cast to protect a tendon problem he managed through the qualifying final win over Melbourne last week.

The All-Australian key defender, and Collingwood’s most important player, consulted specialists at Epworth Hospital on Tuesday and had his hand put in a cast.

His right wrist and thumb were strapped for the game.Credit: AFL Photos

Moore had his right wrist and thumb strapped for the qualifying final against Melbourne but did not wear a firm brace and didn’t play as though he was hampered by an injury. He took four marks for the contest.

The injury will not stop Moore from playing in the preliminary final, but with a week off this week he is likely to have a light week on the training track.

A senior Collingwood source with knowledge of the issue, but not authorised to speak publicly, confirmed the cast, or brace, but said it was precautionary from the specialists to settle the tendons in his wrist.

Moore was among the best players on the ground in the win over Melbourne and, as the only true tall key defender in the team, is critical to the Magpies’ chances of success in the finals. Fellow defender Nathan Murphy, a strong overhead mark, plays on opposition tall forwards but he stands only 192 centimetres, compared to Moore’s 203.

Moore missed the last two rounds of the home and away season – the loss at Marvel Stadium to Brisbane by 24 points and the 70-point win over Essendon – with a hamstring injury.

Collingwood will welcome Nick Daicos back into the team for the preliminary final against either Port Adelaide or GWS. Which player goes out of the team for Daicos will be informed by the outcome of the Brayden Maynard tribunal hearing.

If Maynard is suspended, Daicos would be the replacement if Collingwood only makes the single change to the winning team of 23.

If Maynard is cleared, then pressure will be on Pat Lipinski and substitute Jack Ginnivan to hold their places in the team.

Keep up to date with the best AFL coverage in the country. Sign up for the Real Footy newsletter.

Most Viewed in Sport
