Japan’s head coach has claimed that England ‘have weaknesses’ as they look to take a scalp in their Rugby World Cup group stage fixture on Sunday. Steve Borthwick’s side relied on the kicking of George Ford in their 27-10 win over Argentina and failed to score any tries in the match.

Japan also won their opening match 42-12 against Chile and sense that they can take a scalp against England. Coach Jamie Joseph has made four changes to his team to try and restrict their opposition’s kicking game.

England had to play 77 minutes of their opening match with 14 men after Tom Curry was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle. Borthwick’s side will also be without Owen Farrell who is also suspended against Japan, resulting in Ford starting at fly-half.

Despite winning their opening World Cup match, Borthwick’s side were beaten in warm-up games against Wales, Ireland and Fiji. England were also blitzed 10-53 at Twickenham against France in their final Six Nations game back in March.

Joseph said: “We’ve seen England at their best in the last match they played, but prior to that we’ve seen that they’ve got a few weaknesses.” If Japan’s tactics are working, England can call on Mako Vunipola from the bench after he served a two-match suspension.

Uruguay served up a positive example for Japan on Thursday when the host nation defeated the South Americans 27-12. Despite their loss, Joseph says that Uruguay’s performance against France can serve as inspiration for his beefed-up side as they seek to contain England.

Don’t miss… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. But we’ve got a handful in terms of England and the way they play the game.

“They play it different to everyone else at the World Cup. They control the game very well through their kicking game and the set piece. For a tier two team, not just Japan, it’s always a real challenge.

“We are expecting a lot of pressure, kicking is a big part of their game. We have got to be good enough to catch those balls under extreme pressure.”
