Arsenal fan Piers Morgan claims Mikel Arteta humiliated Aaron Ramsdale by dropping him against Everton. The goalkeeper was axed at Goodison Park, with summer signing David Raya coming in to replace him.

Raya made his Arsenal debut and kept a clean sheet. The Spaniard was rarely called into action as Everton struggled to create any chances of note.

Ramsdale watched on from the bench as Leandro Trossard’s second-half strike sealed a deserved win for the visitors. Ramsdale had started Arsenal’s last 52 matches in the Premier League before Sunday’s encounter.

He wasn’t the only player Arteta dropped from the 3-1 win over Manchester United earlier this month. Kai Havertz also lost his spot, with Fabio Vieira coming into the midfield.

More info

Morgan understood the decision to leave out Havertz but didn’t share the same view over Ramsdale’s omission. He claimed the 25-year-old did not deserve to lose his place.

Morgan wrote on X: “I don’t understand what Ramsdale has done to deserve being dropped? Havertz, yes.. but Ramsdale’s been consistently superb for us. Why humiliate him?”

In a later post, he wrote: “I don’t believe in having 2 top ‘keepers with neither knowing who’s No 1. Nothing against Raya, who is very good, but don’t like the way Ramsdale’s being treated.”

Ramsdale only signed a new contract at Arsenal earlier this year. The deal will keep him at the Emirates until the summer of 2026 with an option of a further year but his axe on Sunday will only raise doubts over his long-term spot in the side.

Don’t miss… Before the match, Arteta insisted he needed to give Raya minutes ahead of a busy schedule. Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign at home to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday before the north London derby against Tottenham next Sunday.

Arteta again reiterated his stance on his goalkeepers in his post-match press conference. He questioned why the same energy was not used for outfield players who were not in the starting XI.

Asked why Raya started, Arteta said: “The same rationale that Fabio played here or that Eddie played ahead of Gabriel Jesus. I haven’t had a single question on why Gabriel hasn’t started – he has won more trophies including me in that dressing room but they don’t [ask why].

“It is something that historically is done like this but I cannot have two players in this position and not play them. David has tremendous qualities like Aaron has and Karl [Hein] has, but we have to use them and it is like this.”
