Liverpool legend Didi Hamann was taken ill during a broadcasting stint on Austrian television on Wednesday night.

The former Bayern Munich player features regularly on German-language television for Champions League coverage and Bundesliga ties, recently weighing in on the short reign of Thomas Tuchel at his old club and dubbing the efforts of his compatriot ‘disastrous’.

But the 50-year-old was unable to pass judgement of his former team on Wednesday in the wake of their 4-3 victory over Manchester United at the Allianz Arena.

Although Hamman began the broadcast for Sky Sports Austria ahead of kick-off for the evening’s first televised clash, which saw Union Berlin travel to Real Madrid, he quickly disappeared.

In his place, alongside host Constanze Weiss, and ex-Red Bull Salzburg striker Marc Janko, the broadcaster had to draft in Janko’s international team-mate Marko Stankovic.

The ex-Liverpool star was replaced on the roster by Austria international Marko Stankovic

But Weiss clarified the curious turn of events with a brief statement explaining the new set-up, sharing that the ex-German international had been ‘sent home’.

‘Did Hamann is unfortunately ill and lost his voice during the course of the show. That’s why we sent Didi home’.

As per BILD, Hamann is thought to have had a hoarse voice for the start of his short spell of punditry.

Sky Sports Austria marked the announcement with a tongue-in-cheek graphic that showed Stankovic being substituted into the studio for the German television personality.

Had Hamann been watching from home, he would have no doubt been delighted with the result for his former side.

Former Man Utd target Harry Kane showed the Red Devils what they were missing with a goal and an assist for new club Bayern Munich

Tuchel’s players ran the show in Munich on a difficult night for Erik ten Hag’s team, with former Man United transfer target Harry Kane proved exactly why the Red Devils had been keen to tempt him to Old Trafford.

As well as punishing defensive lapses with persistent threat, Kane inked his name on the scoresheet with Bayern’s third, a penalty kick after Christian Eriksen received a handball call against him.

The England captain also provided an assist for his new club’s opener as Leroy Sane outdid Andre Onana.

Hamann was a vocal advocate of Kane joining Bayern over the summer, urging his former club to ‘pay what (Tottenham chairman Daniel) Levy wants’ in light of to the star player’s willingness to come to Munich.
