{"id":291219,"date":"2023-09-25T08:20:20","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T08:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/?p=291219"},"modified":"2023-09-25T08:20:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T08:20:20","slug":"evans-insists-ten-hag-has-a-good-thing-going-at-man-united","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/soccer\/evans-insists-ten-hag-has-a-good-thing-going-at-man-united\/","title":{"rendered":"Evans insists Ten Hag has a &apos;good thing going&apos; at Man United"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Jonny Evans insists Erik ten Hag has &#8216;a good thing going&#8217; at Man United despite turbulent start to the season &#8211; as he claims the club must deal with &#8216;ups and downs&#8217; after win at Burnley<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Jonny Evans comes out in support of Erik ten Hag following poor start to season<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Veteran defender starred in Man United&#8217;s 1-0 win against Burnley on Saturday<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mail Sport&#8217;s new WhatsApp Channel: Get the breaking news and exclusives here<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jonny Evans is convinced Manchester United have a &#8216;good thing going&#8217; under Erik ten Hag despite their shaky start to the season.<\/p>\n<p>Things have gone awry after a promising first campaign under the Dutchman, with the Red Devils losing four of their first six matches in all competitions for the first time since 1986.<\/p>\n<p>There were some mitigating factors in that poor run but that did not stop the pressure mounting on the Old Trafford giants heading into Saturday evening&#8217;s Premier League trip to Burnley.<\/p>\n<p>Ten Hag&#8217;s troops were far from their best but Bruno Fernandes&#8217; brilliant volley secured a 1-0 win for a side that begin their Carabao Cup defence at home to Crystal Palace on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Evans watched February&#8217;s Wembley triumph from the stands and is now back at the club he came through at as a boy, with the experienced defender confident about United&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/09\/75802169-12557107-image-a-24_1695628997514.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jonny Evans made his first start for Manchester United since re-joining the club in Saturday&#8217;s 1-0 win against Burnley<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/08\/75801715-0-image-a-2_1695627741880.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The defender is convinced that United &#8216;have a good thing going&#8217; under Erik ten Hag despite an underwhelming start to the season<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/08\/75801713-0-image-a-3_1695627748111.jpg\" height=\"951\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ten Hag re-signed Evans in the summer to provide cover in defence, and the defender has been called into action following a spate of injuries in the United squad<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;ve had some up and down moments at Man United over the years,&#8217; said the defender, who won three Premier League titles and a Champions League during his previous spell at the club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think you get that if you want to be at the top. You know, it&#8217;s going to be very up and down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You&#8217;ve got to be able to deal with setbacks and this club is a fantastic club, always want to be challenging at the top, so it&#8217;s all part and parcel of it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The manager&#8217;s got a good thing going here,&#8217; added Evans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m a fan of the club so I was able to watch them a lot last year, been at both finals to support. Like I say, I think the manager&#8217;s got a good thing going.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Evans made his second appearance of the season and first United start in eight-and-a-half years on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The 35-year-old impressed against Vincent Kompany&#8217;s Burnley, scoring a goal that was disallowed before providing an exceptional pass for Fernandes&#8217; volleyed winner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;That was great,&#8217; the beaming Northern Irishman said after his 200th United appearance. &#8216;I was really looking forward to it all day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I got the shout yesterday in training that I was going to be starting, so I couldn&#8217;t wait for the game, really.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was more nervous in the pre-season, my first pre-season game, to be honest, playing up in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I didn&#8217;t feel any nerves tonight. I actually felt a lot of excitement going into the game. I couldn&#8217;t wait for it and I felt good, I felt ready.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/08\/75801821-0-image-a-6_1695627979343.jpg\" height=\"435\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Evans had a goal disallowed in the win at Turf Moor but did set up Bruno Fernandes to score the only goal of the game<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/08\/75801727-0-image-a-4_1695627764057.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Northern Irishman was in the crowd at Wembley last season to see Ten Hag&#8217;s men win the Carabao Cup<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/08\/75801857-0-image-a-7_1695627987699.jpg\" height=\"875\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Evans won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his previous spell at Old Trafford<\/p>\n<p>Evans produced an impressive all-round display at Turf Moor, leading captain Fernandes to pass on the man of the match award that he had been handed.<\/p>\n<p>The centre-back joked it was just the third of a career he never expected to return to such heights having left Leicester on the back of relegation and an injury-hit campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he ever thought he would get back to this level, Evans immediately responded: &#8216;No, definitely not.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s not a case of winding down. I think people&#8217;s career trajectories kind of end up that way and it&#8217;s very difficult for a club when you&#8217;re 35 years old to take a chance on you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I had a lot of injury problems last year as well, so for the club to do that and see the value in me, I&#8217;m very grateful to be given the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;On one side it feels really surreal and then on the other side it just feels completely normal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/25\/08\/75801803-0-image-a-5_1695627821565.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The 35-year-old had an injury-ravaged season last term and was unable to prevent Leicester City suffering relegation to the Championship<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s quite difficult to get my head around sometimes, but I&#8217;m loving it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;For a 35-year-old I suppose to come back in &#8211;
