Chelsea could be offered the chance to re-sign Tammy Abraham from AS Roma in an elaborate swap deal as Mauricio Pochettino desperately searches for a new striker. The Blues have been wasteful in front of goal so far this season and have won only once in six games this season, leaving Pochettino’s men languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League standings. But the return of their former hero Abraham may give them the lift they have been searching for.

Pochettino’s side have scored only five times in five games – three of which came in the 3-0 win over winless Luton Town – and they have failed to find the net in any of their last three matches against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Aston Villa. An injury to £60m signing Christopher Nkunku in pre-season also disrupted their plans and left the Blues blunt in attack.

Chelsea are understood to be tracking Brentford target man Ivan Toney with a view to a £60m January bid to solve their issues up front. But according to reports in Italy, Abraham could be a much cheaper and less risky option, with Roma open to a straight swap deal.

Italian outlet Calciomercatoweb concur with Graeme Bailey – speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast – that the Giallorossi could allow Abraham head back to Stamford Bridge if it means signing Romelu Lukaku on a permanent deal.

Chelsea inserted a £68m buy-back clause as part of the deal, which expired this summer, but he still could find himself back at his boyhood club.

The England international was offloaded to help fund Chelsea’s £97.5m club-record signing of Lukaku from Inter Milan in August 2021. Ironically, only two and a half years later, the pair could be swapping clubs again after the Belgian flopped in his second spell in west London.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

DON’T MISS

The report adds that Roma’s owners, the Friedkin family, would ‘almost certainly’ be interested in signing Lukaku on a permanent basis. It is even suggested that Chelsea’s goalscoring problems means the two clubs could begin talks in January if the west London club decide to ‘knock on Roma’s door’.

Summer signing Nicolas Jackson has struggled to hit the heights expected of him since his £32million switch from Villarreal with just one goal so far and a host of clear-cut chances squandered.

Pochettino has Armando Broja as backup, but the Albania international is still finding his feet after spending 10 months out recovering from a ruptured ACL. But getting Lukaku off the club’s books and signing a goalscorer Chelsea fans have faith in would solve two problems for the Argentinian boss in an instant.

Lukaku has hit the ground running since joining Roma on an initial loan deal, scoring twice for Jose Mourinho’s side so far.

Abraham, meanwhile, is still sidelined after rupturing his ACL in pre-season, but his return of just nine goals in 54 appearances last season means he would be down the pecking order at the Stadio Olimpico.

When quizzed on his future in March this year, Abraham refused to rule out going back to Chelsea. He said: “Would I go back there? In football you can never say never,” he said. “Right now, my focus is here at Roma – we want to finish the season strongly.”
