Jurgen Klopp may finally have the next Steven Gerrard in his ranks at Liverpool following Dominik Szoboszlai’s impressive start to life at Anfield. The 22-year-old has excelled during his short spell on Merseyside thus far and is already being hailed as a vitally important cog in the Reds machine.

Szoboszlai has quickly slotted into Liverpool’s midfield and has not needed long to establish himself as a sure-fire starter. He is currently enjoying a promising run of form, having scored twice in his last four appearances for the Reds in all competitions.

The Hungarian playmaker was on target with a special strike against Leicester City on Wednesday, finding the top corner from range after making a perfect connection with the ball. It marked the latest show of brilliance from Szoboszlai at his new club, who will seemingly reap the rewards of his presence in midfield for years to come.

Plenty of comparisons have already been made with Liverpool hero Gerrard, who was known for his no-nonsense displays in the engine room as well as his powerful long-range shooting ability. The Reds have had some top midfielders since Gerrard began to decline in the early 2010s, but none have come close to matching his unrivalled impact at the club he is virtually synonymous with.

He has already revealed that he has a tattoo inspired by Gerrard’s words, while he also picked the No 8 upon his arrival at Anfield as a show of respect to his predecessor.

“Of course it’s a great number, a lot of great players had this number,” explained Szoboszlai following his move to Liverpool from RB Leipzig earlier this year. “And also I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard, what he said, I don’t even remember when but before. It was also a reason why.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. However, it seems as though the sky will be the limit for Liverpool’s newest hero, as long as he is able to maintain his best form for the duration of his stay on Merseyside.

Want the latest Premier League news as we publish it on Express Sport?
