Borussia Dortmund went top of the Bundesliga on Friday night after a hard-fought 3-1 win over Hoffenheim.

The highlight of the match came in the fifth minute of second-half injury time, when Julian Ryerson produced a wonderful solo goal to secure the three points.

With Dortmund a man down after Ramy Bensebaini’s sending off 20 minutes earlier, Ryerson won the ball just outside his own penalty area and immediately broke on the hosts down the left wing.

He beat two players for pace comfortably on the outside before cutting in sharply to ease past a third.

Hoffenheim had committed men forward in search of an equaliser and were stretched at the back, meaning Ryerson had time to pick his spot from inside the area and slot coolly past the keeper before wheeling away in well-deserved celebration.

It was a game that perhaps should have been more comfortable for the visitors, who took an early lead through Niclas Fulkrug but were back level seven minutes later after giving away a penalty.

Marco Reus then restored the lead on the stroke of half time, a third goal in as many games for the 34-year-old.

Ryerson’s late goal confirmed a win that takes Dortmund above champions Bayern Munich to the top of the league, an impressive start to the season after losing a player of Jude Bellingham’s calibre.

The lead could be short-lived with Bayern and Leverkusen both a point behind with a game in hand, but Edin Terzic’s men are certainly in the hunt after missing out on the title in heartbreaking fashion last season.

Leverkusen travel to Mainz in their next game on Saturday, while Bayern face an interesting test against a Leipzig side that have won four of their opening five games.

Dortmund will next be in action in the Champions League when they face AC Milan at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.

Marco Reus also got on the scoresheet for the third time in as many games

It was a tense end to the match for Dortmund after Rami Bensebaini was sent off for a second bookable offence
