Newcastle are counting the cost of a mounting injury list ahead of Wednesday’s visit of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Saturday’s 2-0 win over Burnley was tinged by the sight of Joelinton being forced off with a hamstring problem four minutes after coming on. He had only just returned from a knee layoff.

Sven Botman and Callum Wilson were already missing with knee and hamstring issues respectively, while Anthony Gordon picked up his fifth booking of the season and is now suspended for next weekend’s trip to West Ham.

Howe said: ‘It looks like a hamstring (for Joelinton). That would be a huge blow if we lose him. Callum’s got a very minor hamstring problem. We hope we will see him before the international break, but there’s no guarantee. Sven has a knee problem, and I don’t think we’ll see him before the international break. Hopefully, we’ll see him very quickly afterwards.

‘You can add Joe Willock to that list, so it’s a difficult moment for us injury wise. It’s that kind of season for us, with the physical demands we’re going to face. We have to be resilient and deal with the challenges that will come. We just hope we can get those players back really quickly.’

Newcastle suffered another injury blow, with Joelinton sustaining a hamstring injury

Eddie Howe admitted it is a ‘difficult moment’ for Newcastle at present regarding injuries

Anthony Gordon will miss next weekend’s game against West Ham because of suspension

Of Gordon’s booking and ban, picked up for kicking the ball away, Howe added: ‘It’s an absolute killer for us because Anthony’s been in great form. He’s been excellent and added so much to the team, so you don’t want to take that out, especially with the rhythm that he’s in.

‘It then goes into the fact that it’s an international break after that, so it’s going to be quite a while that he won’t play. It’s a big blow, and probably a needless yellow card.’
