Daniil Medvedev believes it is highly possible that Carlos Alcaraz will achieve his dream of seeing out the year as World No 1 ahead Novak Djokovic.

The Russian explains that the Serbian’s lack of activity in tournaments towards the back end of the year may cost him a place at the top of the ATP rankings heading into 2024.

“Everywhere I go I try to become champion, so the dream of being number one is still alive,” he said on his own chances of finishing on top. “However, I am aware that I am very far away and that my fight must be more about trying to finish in the top two and stay close to the top so that I can conquer it at the beginning of 2024.

He then added: “I don’t think Novak will play many tournaments, so logic dictates that Carlos Alcaraz will be number 1 at the end of the year. I will give my best in every tournament I play.”

Alcaraz finds himself in second place in the ratings with 8535 points behind Djokovic who has accumulated 11795 points. Medvedev is behind both men in third with 7280 points while the next nearest player, Holger Rune, is some way off 4710 points in fourth.

Djokovic is comfortably ahead of Alcaraz after winning three out of the four Grand Slams, only missing out on Wimbledon to the Spaniard. But Alcaraz is confident he can finish the year in first place as he looks to up his activity as 2024 draws near.

To achieve great results in the remaining tournaments,” he said. “I hope to do it at the end of this year. The tournament I’m really excited about is the ATP Finals, which I didn’t get to play last year.

“So there are great, really great tournaments that I really want to play. I really want to get great results there and I hope to do that.”
