Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez proved doubters wrong by putting on a boxing clinic against Jermell Charlo on Saturday night.

The Mexican, 33, dismantled challenger Charlo in Las Vegas as he cruised to a unanimous 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109 win over the American. Canelo knocked down his opponent in the seventh round with an overhand right followed by an uppercut, before going on to record a staggering 60th win in 64 professional fights.

He retained his WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles despite the murmurings of his decline after recent fights. And the Guadalajara-born fan-favourite put any talk of retirement to bed with a rousing post-fight message.

He said in his interview with Jim Gray: “I love boxing so f***ing much!" before adding: "I'm the best. Who's better? Nobody can beat this Canelo.

"I worked all the fight to go in the body. Then I changed the punch and that's what happened. We worked for that. We know he's a great fighter. He knows how to move in the ring and we worked that in the gym for three months.

"Three months in the mountains without my family, without everything. But I still love boxing. Boxing made me the person I am today. Boxing is my life."

Canelo went on to say he doesn't “f***ing care” who he fights next. Alvarez has not yet committed to facing David Benavidez, 26, for the WBC super-middleweight belt.

That’s despite WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman previously declaring Benavidez as a mandatory challenger for the title. Should Alvarez turn down a fight with his 27-0 opponent, the WBC would likely vacate his belt.

Canelo suffered his last defeat against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. He bounced back with wins over Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder by decision.

However, the two boxers were considered past their prime and a league below, respectively, leading some fans to consider whether Canelo was on a downward trajectory. But his flawless display against Charlo will certainly have silenced his critics for the time being.
