{"id":292068,"date":"2023-10-02T21:34:19","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T21:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/?p=292068"},"modified":"2023-10-02T21:34:19","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T21:34:19","slug":"american-team-andretti-edge-closer-to-joining-f1-with-fia-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/racing\/f1\/american-team-andretti-edge-closer-to-joining-f1-with-fia-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"American team Andretti edge closer to joining F1 with FIA approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>American team Andretti edge closer to joining F1 grid after receiving FIA approval &#8211; but they must still overcome opposition to expanding the series from\u00a0rights holder Liberty Media and the existing teams<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andretti are owned by Michael Andretti, the son of 1978 world champion Mario<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Teamed up with\u00a0Cadillac, a division of American motoring giant General Motors\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>F1 rights holder Liberty Media and the existing teams can still block the process<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>American team Andretti have been approved for entry to Formula One by the governing FIA &#8211; but that&#8217;s not the end of the story by a long way.<\/p>\n<p>Their entry, run by Michael, son of the great 1978 world champion Michael, now faces opposition from the teams and the sport&#8217;s owners, Liberty Media.<\/p>\n<p>Andretti are backed by General Motors and consequently possess the necessarily financial clout &#8211; a fact that swayed the FIA to endorse them ahead of four other candidates who made it to the second phase of vetting.<\/p>\n<p>But the teams are reluctant to see outsiders thinning their earnings, and certainly not for as little as the \u00a3165million joining fee that is a stipulated requirement of any new competitor &#8211; the amount would be split between the existing grid as compensation for prize money going 11 ways rather than the current 10.<\/p>\n<p>They are particularly sensitive about this because the fee was set before Formula One&#8217;s success over recent seasons saw team values soar to between \u00a3600m to \u00a31billion.<\/p>\n<p>Indications at the moment are that Stefano Domenicali, who acts as F1 chief executive for Liberty, is minded to side with the teams to thwart Andretti&#8217;s entry, whatever the FIA may have decided yesterday.
