Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan has opened up about a disgruntled fan forcing him to drink milk as he feared that the supporter was going to “glass” him amid a disappointing Rugby World Cup campaign. The Wallabies are on the brink of elimination in the pool stages after defeats to both Fiji and Wales.

Australia boss Eddie Jones has come under considerable pressure for his role in the demise of the nation’s rugby, having been accused of attending a job interview with Japan on the eve of the tournament.

With Australia set for an embarrassing exit, barring exceptional circumstances, one supporter was claimed to have taken out his frustrations on McLennan as he detailed an unsettling meeting that saw him forced to drink milk.

“He ordered me to drink it,” McLennan told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I took a sip. He told me milk was what all he and his family were all drinking following the Wales defeat. He sat there for 10 minutes. He was particularly aggrieved, which I understand, but I think he crossed the line. It got so messy I thought he was going to swing a punch at me or try to glass me.

I haven’t told anyone before now apart from friends. I guess it is just a sign of the times.”

Despite the ordeal, McLennan and Rugby Australia have thrown their backing behind Jones – who has dismissed the idea that he has interviewed for another position – even though he has led Australia to a disastrous campaign.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. That is the great irony of the situation.

“Eddie is a fantastic coach. People may not like the way he conducts himself in the media but he has worked his ass off and he is a smart guy. He has a great win rate and a great World Cup record versus a coach [Rennie] that had never been to a World Cup and had just lost to Italy.”
