Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool’s match against Tottenham should be replayed after Luis Diaz’s first-half goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside. The strike was initially disallowed by referee Simon Hooper before the decision was upheld following a quick VAR check, with PGMOL later admitting that Stockley Park knew Diaz was onside.

A formal apology was promptly issued but Liverpool were not satisfied and have since vowed to ‘explore the range of options […] for escalation and resolution’. PGMOL released the audio of the conversations between on-field officials and the VAR room on Tuesday, with the replay operator the only person to immediately spot the mistake and call for the game to be stopped.

Klopp was asked for his thoughts on the audio in Wednesday’s press conference and the Liverpool boss responded by insisting that the fixture should be replayed in order to achieve a fair result.

He said: “They didn’t do that on purpose, we shouldn’t forget that. It was a mistake, an obvious mistake. I think there would have been solutions for it afterwards.

“If not I can say, and probably people don’t want me to say it, not as the Liverpool manager so much but more as a football person, I think the outcome should be a replay. That’s how it is. It probably will not happen. The argument against it would be if we open that gate, everyone would ask for a replay.

“I think the situation is that unprecedented, it didn’t happen before. I’m 56 years old and with 50 years in football, something like that, as far as I can remember never happened. That’s why I think a replay would be the right thing to do.

“If it happened again, a replay would be the right thing to do or the ref has the opportunity to get both managers together, say ‘we made a mistake’ but they sort it and Liverpool can score a goal and we start from there.”

Those in power at Anfield remain adamant that it would benefit the sport as a whole to investigate the Diaz offside given the scale of the error in question. Meanwhile, some other Premier League clubs feel that Liverpool should accept that mistakes are a part of the game and simply draw a line under what happened, according to The Independent.

The Reds released a statement on Monday in which they vowed to explore all options available to them, saying: “We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

“It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention. That such failings have already been categorised as ‘significant human error’ is also unacceptable.

“Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency. This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.”
