Newcastle's opening Champions League goal of the season led to wild celebrations at St James' Park following PSG's defensive blunder – before Dan Burn made it two.

Miguel Almiron fired home from a tight angle to the delight of 50,000 Geordies on their second matchday, following 0-0 draw with AC Milan at the San Siro. The Ligue 1 giants didn't know what had hit them after a blistering start from Eddie Howe's men who showed no intention of sitting back and frustrating Kylian Mbappe and his star-studded colleagues.

The strike came after Alexander Isak's shot was well saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma before his defenders failed to react. Almiron's celebrations were met with deafening cheers from the home fans who were overjoyed by their tough group draw which also includes Borussia Dortmund.

Marquinhos was the man at fault for the goal with a poor pass and Donnarumma not getting close to Almiron's follow-up. PSG looked wobbly not long after with Dan Burn getting another huge cheer from his home crowd with a tackle on Ousmane Dembele.

Marquinhos and Donnarumma were guilty of another miscommunication in the middle of the half – as Fabian Schar so nearly made it two following a corner.

It was made two by Burn shortly before half-time after his header was adjudged to have crossed the line by a lengthy VAR check had had fans on the edge of their seats.

Former Newcastle man Chris Waddle had said of the first goal on BBC Sport: "You have got to say it is a bit of a mess from the defence.

"They got caught out and it was a fantastic save from the first one but Almiron reacts first and it is a brilliant finish.

"Newcastle have started to win the ball higher up the field and they have been rewarded."

Speaking of the fixture after PSG beat Borussia Dortmund in their own opener, Howe said: "It’s a very, very difficult assignment for us defensively.

"Part of our challenge is to get the balance right between not leaving too much space behind us and creating enough danger in their box.

"We have to be perfect in that respect. It’s going to be very difficult to contain Mbappe but I don’t believe in man-marking."
