Football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on social media: "Paul Pogba has tested testosterone doping positive also to backup sample today. Juventus will now decide how to proceed with his contract as Pogba faces risk of long-term ban."

Traces of testosterone were discovered in Pogba's system following Juventus' opening day Serie A clash with Udinese at the Stadio Friuli in Udine. Pogba, who had returned to Turin from Manchester United in 2022, was an unused substitute in the match.

However, he was still selected for anti-doping tests – where he provided the positive results. Pogba was then given three days to provide a b-sample for counter-analysis, but that has now come back positive.

Pogba will now face questioning from an anti-doping tribunal, if he is found guilty the Frenchman could be slapped with a two-year suspension. However, if Pogba is found to have knowingly doped – his sentence could double to four-years.

He now has one week to build his defence and is expected to face a tribunal in two to four weeks.

Testosterone is a hormone which can increase muscular strength, it occurs naturally in men and can be found in various over-the-counter products. However, tests isolate synthetic forms – which Pogba has tested positive for – to signal doping.
