Roy Hodgson has backed a three-continent World Cup.

FIFA have announced that the 2030 running of the competition – the centenary edition – is going to begin in South America with matches in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina before returning to Spain, Portugal and Morocco for the remainder of the tournament.

England boss Gareth Southgate said this week that he is "not a fan" of the concept, but his predecessor Hodgson believes it will be good for more of the world to see the action.

He said: "It is a World Cup so the world should have a chance to see it close hand, so I have never been against games being awarded to other parts of the world. Football is not a European stronghold, or a South American stronghold. It's not exclusive to those continents.

"If FIFA think this is feasible and FIFA members are prepared to go along with it, I don't have any particular qualms about it because these days, travelling is so easy.

"I presume they will organise it so games are played in South America at first, so then they will be travelling round South America and then travelling back. I think it is feasible to do it. Whether it's the right thing to do it, I don't really know."

The introduction of three more countries into the hosting process means that all six teams that host a game will qualify automatically. Paraguay are the only of the six who did not make last year's Qatar World Cup.

As well as hosting the first ever competition in 1930, Uruguay also went on to win the competition by beating Argentina in the final.

At the time, CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, had their headquarters based in Paraguay. CONMEBOL was also the only confederation in existence at the time.

The 2030 competition will be the first time Portugal has hosted the World Cup and the second time an African country has held the competition since South Africa in 2020. Portugal launched unsuccessful bids to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups alongside Spain, who have not played hosts of football's elite international competition since 1982.
