Ireland fans and players have been spotted belting out the famous Cranberries song ‘Zombie’ after games at the Rugby World Cup, as France has been treated to renditions of the newly-adopted anthem on several occasions – most recently in the blockbuster 13-8 victory over South Africa – but the Irish will hope that they get the chance to do so again with a win over Scotland.

Ireland, Scotland and South Africa could all be sent home depending on the result in Saturday’s clash between Ireland and Scotland. A victory for Andy Farrell’s men would likely see the controversial song being chanted around the Stade de France with tens of thousands of Irish fans set to be in attendance.

Despite the likes of Johnny Sexton and Peter O’Mahony previously joining in with the anthem, some have called for its removal due to the 1994 song being created as part of the band’s second album ‘No Need to Argue’ and was written in response to an IRA bombing in Warrington the previous year, which claimed the lives of two children aged three and 12.

The late Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of The Cranberries, always maintained the song wasn’t intended to show support for either Protestants or Catholics. ”I don’t care whether it’s Protestant or Catholic, I care about the fact that innocent people are being harmed,” she told Vox magazine.

It was nothing to do with writing a song about it because I’m Irish. You know, I never thought I’d write something like this in a million years. I used to think I’d get into trouble.

“I remember seeing one of the mothers on television, just devastated. I felt so sad for her, that she’d carried him for nine months, been through all the morning sickness, the whole thing and some… p****, some airhead who thought he was making a point, did that.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Don’t miss…

Some have insisted that the song is anti-IRA and should not be played at international matches, but ex-Ireland star Trevor Ringland has been among those who feel that ‘Zombie’ should continue to be sung at the World Cup.

“Rugby always showed a different way on this island: it showed violence was never necessary and it’s about building relationships across this island between people,” Ringland, who was also the former vice-chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party, told the Belfast News Letter.

“It’s a sporting event, but at the same time it’s about showing how to do proper relations across this island, and I think [the rendition after beating South Africa] paid credit to The Cranberries for that song and for taking the stand that they did. I think those that condemn it maybe they should look deeper at what that song was standing against, and how it also represents what we see on the sporting field.”
