Ajax are staring down the barrel of a relegation scrap after falling into the Eredivisie drop-zone following their 2-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.

The Dutch giants, who haven't finished below third in the division since 2006, have won just one of their opening six league matches this season in what is now their worst-ever start to an Eredivisie campaign. Three successive defeats has left manager Maurice Steijn clinging to his job after just a few months charge and has sunk the club into full-on crisis mode.

Ajax finished third last season, having struggled in the wake of Erik ten Hag's departure in 2022. Their points tally of 69 was their lowest (discounting the 2019/20 season which ended prematurely due to the Covid-19 outbreak) since 2009, but if their current form continues for much longer they'll have no trouble earning fewer.

Their season has been plagued by unrest and misfortune. Their clash with Feyenoord last month was postponed after angry Ajax fans threw flares on the pitch after watching their team go 3-0 down. Their game against RKC Waalwijk last week, meanwhile, was abandoned Waalwijk goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen was knocked unconscious in a scary collision with Ajax's Brian Brobbey.

Their crisis is made all the more shocking given the club's wealth, especially when compared to their domestic rivals. Over the past decade they've spent nearly three times as much on players as current Eredivisie leaders PSV have, and nearly five times as much Sunday's opponents AZ.

Should they actually get relegated this season it would be one of the most shocking falls from grace in football history. Not only are Ajax by far and away the most successful team in the history of Dutch football, but they're also one of the most successful teams in Europe, with four Champions Leagues/European Cups to their name.

They last won the competition in 1995, but also won it three years running between 1971 and 1973 during the iconic Johan Cruyff era. They also won the UEFA Cup (Europa League) in 1992 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1987.
