Ireland shut up shop on Tuesday, cancelling a planned media session ahead of their crunch World Cup quarter-final with New Zealand as they sweat on the fitness of three key players.

Wings James Lowe and Mack Hansen and lock James Ryan all remain doubts for the clash between Andy Farrell’s side and the All Blacks in Paris on Saturday night.

Lowe suffered an eye injury in Ireland’s hammering of Scotland and while he was able to train on Tuesday, he did so without taking contact.

Hansen (calf) and Ryan (wrist/hand) are bigger concerns for Ireland head coach Farrell after they also suffered serious injuries against the Scots.

Six Nations grand slam champions and world No 1 Ireland will name their team for New Zealand on Wednesday and will give Lowe and Hansen every chance to prove their fitness but it is unlikely Ryan will be involved. Farrell also has doubts over experienced backs Keith Earls and Robbie Henshaw.

In the other half of the draw, Wales have confirmed star No 10 Dan Biggar will be fit for their quarter-final with Argentina in Marseille on Saturday afternoon.

Biggar hasn’t played since injuring his pectoral muscle injury early in Wales’ 40-6 win over Australia in Lyon on September 24.

He was forced to come on to the bench for Warren Gatland’s side against Georgia at the 11th hour when his fellow fly-half Gareth Anscombe suffered a groin strain in the warm up.

But Biggar did not come on in Wales’ 43-19 win over the Lelos to rest up for the start of the knock-out stages.

Wales are also yet to rule Anscombe and full-back Liam Williams – who has a knee problem – out of the Argentina game. Wales will name their team on Thursday.

‘All of those injured players are, at this stage, looking positive,’ said Wales assistant coach Jonathan Thomas. ‘We’ll make that call closer to the end of the week.’
