Fans have demanded Howard Webb's resignation after he chose not to apologise for the VAR fiasco between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Ange Postecoglou's side overcame the Merseysiders 2-1, but their victory was over-shadowed by one of the biggest VAR mistakes since it was introduced to the Premier League in 2019. A communication error between the on-field referee and assistants and the VAR team in Stockley Park saw Luis Diaz's opening goal incorrectly ruled out for offside.

On Monday Night football, Webb, who is the chief refereeing officer at the PGMOL, offered his thoughts on the now infamous incident and other highly-disputed VAR calls. However, he appeared to veer away from issuing a direct apology.

“You hear at the start, Darren England saying 'checking offside'," Webb said on Mic'd Up. "You can hear Darren is going through the process very quickly. He puts a line across on Romero and I think Darren loses sight of what the on-field decision was. He communicates 'check complete' and the game restarts."

When asked why VAR did not halt the match, he added: “The VAR and AVAR (assistant VAR) asked themselves that question too. When the penny dropped as to what had happened, I think 20 seconds had passed and at that point they considered whether or not they could intervene to stop the game.

"But they recognised that The Laws of the Game, that are set by FIFA and International FA board, doesn’t allow that. It doesn’t allow you to go back in those circumstances and as such, they decided not to intervene." While Webb did his best to provide the context around the VAR confusion, his explanation has not buttered any parsnips for those still fuming about the horror show.

"Howard Webb you are a joke! Just as if nothing happened other than a "mistake". No passion, no apology and Michael Owen just giving him an easy ride on the whole thing! What about the consequences? End of story lets move on!! Joke – resign," one rather upset Liverpool fan wrote.

"What a smarmy, non apologetic, pointless explanation from Howard Webb – at no point has the PGMOL offered a sincere apology for its absolute howler in the TOT v LIV game. Scrap this self important and incompetent organisation," a second ranted.

Liverpool would have gone top of the Premier League if they overcame the North Londoners. But after losing the game in dramatic fashion and drawing 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion, they currently reside in fourth position.
