Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez has reportedly been ordered to compensate his former babysitter’s family by an Italian court after firing her once he found out she had a serious illness.

Martinez is alleged to have sacked a 27-year-old woman from her role just eight months after hiring her having learned that she had a terminal illness which caused her death in January 2023.

The babysitter’s family were not happy with how she was treated, claiming her contract was ‘illegally terminated’ and opted to sue Martinez.

After hearing the case, the Court of Milan declared on Wednesday that Martinez must compensate the family, according to Sport Italia.

Martinez is married to Argentine model Agustina Gandolfo, who has two million followers on Instagram.

Martinez and his wife have reacted angrily to the sentencing, with the pair posting statements on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon.

Within the statement Martinez and his wife claimed their former babysitter’s family were trying to ‘dirty’ their name and wanted to ‘take advantage of the situation’.

They also insisted they had given ‘big help’ to the woman, who they referred to as a ‘lifelong friend’, and suggested the court case was purely motivated by money.

The exact figure that Martinez will pay the family is currently unclear.

Martinez has spent the last five years in Italy after joining Inter from Racing Club in Argentina in 2018.

The 26-year-old also lifted the World Cup with Argentina last year in Qatar, although he endured a difficult tournament which saw him dropped to the bench in the group stages following the side’s shock opening game defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Despite his underwhelming World Cup, Martinez flourished in the second half of last season and is now the club captain.

He has made an exceptional start to the current campaign, scoring 10 goals in eight league outings, including all four in a 4-0 win against Salernitana last month.
