Andre Onana’s early woes have made Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag look foolish, and he should consider replicating Sir Alex Ferguson’s treatment of Massimo Taibi, according to Dwight Yorke. But the Dutchman has an upcoming ‘get-out clause’ that could spare his blushes if Onana continues to struggle.

Ten Hag boldly decided to call time on David de Gea’s 11-year United career in the summer, splashing £57million to reunite with Onana at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old came off a sensational season with Inter Milan, helping the Serie A giants reach the Champions League final.

But he has struggled to settle in Manchester, conceding 19 goals in his first 11 appearances and making a series of high-profile mistakes.

Ten Hag recruited Onana for his superior ball-playing ability and character, but he has created more problems than solutions since his arrival and has plenty to prove.

Yorke isn’t convinced, claiming it was a significant risk to ditch De Gea for an entirely different style of goalkeeper after Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

“They always say the grass is never greener on the other side. I told everybody that they should be careful what they wish for,” Yorke told Stocklytics.

“Ten Hag made the decision to get rid of De Gea and bring in Onana. If you study Onana, and I’m sure Ten Hag did, you’ll see there’s a massive risk with the way he plays – especially in the English game.”

Yorke added: “Managers can look like the fool sometimes by bringing someone in who doesn’t work. I was at the club when Sir Alex brought Massimo Taibi into the side, and he didn’t quite work out.

“The manager did, however, realise that very quickly. I’m not sure if Ten Hag will do that or if he’s stubborn enough to back Onana. We don’t know.”

Ten Hag will hope Onana rediscovers his best form in the coming weeks to help United recover from a disastrous start to the season, suffering six losses in their opening 11 games.
