Jamie Carragher unleashed a furious rant at Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo, accusing the Italian of "milking" a supposed head injury against West Ham.

Zaniolo went down following a seemingly innocuous challenge in midfield, with the Hammers then launching an attack. However, with the Villa man down holding his head, referee David Coote felt obliged to stop the match.

Carragher, on Sky Sports commentary, was convinced Zaniolo wasn’t injured and accused the midfielder of taking advantage of the rule that dictates play must be stopped in the event of a head injury. The Liverpool legend fumed at Zaniolo’s antics and said something needed to be done to prevent players from abusing a system designed to protect players.

“No! I've had enough of this,” Carragher raged. “People are milking this head injury stuff. I understand if it's really serious, they go down and let the referee know.

“But he's seen the challenge and there's nothing wrong with his head. Get on with the game! People just hold their head because they know the game will be stopped if they've lost the ball in a dangerous position.”

Zaniolo indeed was soon able to continue and many fans were quick to agree with Carragher. One said: “Carragher is spot on re the head injury rule. It was brought in to deal with serious head injuries and concussion. Not for obviously non-serious head injuries (like the Zaniolo one). Players are abusing the rule. They know going down holding their head will result in a stoppage.”

Another said: “That is awful from Zaniolo. Exploiting a rule designed to protect players from serious injuries. There should be some kind of fine/suspension for those who exploit it like that.”

A third raged: “Where’s the officials telling that little t***** Zaniolo to get on with it when he’s faking a head injury to stop our counter attack at 2-1!? Could’ve been a totally different game!”

Villa went on to win the game 4-1 thanks to Douglas Luiz’s brace and strikes from Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey.
