Football manager Geir Bakke returned to his former club who displayed their anger towards him after he left for their rivals.

The Norwegian coach was making a return to Lillestrom for the first time since he left the club in July after three years at the helm to take charge of their bitter enemy Valerenga. The clash on Sunday (October 22) – which Lillestrom won 2-0 – was marred by a horrific banner of Bakke who was depicted being hung from the neck.

The home fans whipped the tifo out near the end of the first half as both sets of players had to walk past the distasteful banner. Pictures of the controversy quickly found there way onto social media as fans were gobsmacked upon viewing the banner that was described as "disgraceful" by one X user.

More fans had their say as another wrote: "That's actually mental", while a Norwegian fan offered some context to the situation as they commented: "Pretty much the equivalent of Klopp quitting Liverpool for United in the middle of the season. Not saying that justifies the banner, just offering some context". A fourth fan was in shock as they said: "That is messed up! Surely that can’t be allowed".

On top of having to deal with the antics of Lillestrom fans, it's been a difficult season for Bakke and Valerenga as their 2-0 defeat on the weekend was their 13th of the season as they sit 13th in the league table. They are narrowly outside the relegation play-off spaces due to goal difference but a continuation of their poor form could see them sliding further down the table quickly.

Before joining Valerenga, Bakke, 53, was linked with a move to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen earlier this year as Norwegian football expert David Weatherston said his style of play would work in Scotland. "I think what you will get from him is a solid base and set up", the former player said to Aberdeen Live.

"He likes strong players who work hard, but also mixes it up with technical players in midfield. His team seems to have a good mix of both a physical presence and technical ability and I think that is something that would work pretty well in Scotland."
