Manchester United hero Gary Neville made himself look silly when jumping to the defence of Erik ten Hag on Sunday evening after his former side were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Manchester City. The ex-right-back refused to compare Tottenham and United due to the differences between both clubs, failing to acknowledge the challenging circumstances that Ange Postecoglou inherited over the summer.

United have endured a miserable start to the season, with the team looking short of both motivation and ideas. Pressure is piling on the shoulders of Ten Hag as a result, prompting conversations about whether it is fair to part ways with the ex-Ajax boss with so much uncertainty at Old Trafford surrounding the year-long takeover saga.

Ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has been among the Dutchman’s critics, questioning why the Glazers are being used as an excuse for Ten Hag when Postecoglou has hit the ground running at Tottenham and Unai Emery continues to impress at Aston Villa in less time. Responding to the comparisons, Neville replied: “Those managers you talk about came into stable environments. They (United) have currently got a guy (Sir Jim Ratcliffe) all over the news who is going to own 25 per cent.

“You imagine you’re in a business, in a football club, and the news is that a guy is going to come in and wipe out the whole football department. Can you imagine what’s going on in that football club at this moment in time, in and around Erik ten Hag?”

Don’t miss… Man Utd have four reasons to give Ten Hag vote of no confidence after derby loss[LATEST]

Although Neville’s justification of the Ten Hag scenario is reasonable, the 48-year-old overlooked the negatives that Postecoglou had to tackle when he became Tottenham manager. The Aussie has transformed Spurs into an attacking outfit that supporters have fallen in love with, and there are already speculative shouts that they could challenge for the title.

Few could have predicted the unbelievable impact that Postecoglou has had on the club both on and off of the pitch considering that Tottenham were in a negative spiral upon his arrival. As pointed out by many on social media, Spurs headed into this season on the back of their lowest finish in the last 10 years and without any European football to be excited about.
