Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted his former side are not ready to win the league this season when appearing on Sky Sports.

The Reds struggled against Luton at Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon – with Luis Diaz rescuing a single point from the bench. "Liverpool aren't ready to win the league," Carragher admitted in the post-match analysis.

"I think Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters know that right now – they want to get back in the top four. But in terms of challenging for the league again, I think they need a new midfield player and a new defender."

Carragher explained: "I think what Liverpool have had in the last 18 months, they're a lot better at it this season, is they're still not as good as Manchester City at stopping counter attacks.

"People always think about Liverpool and how they play, you know, pressing from the front. Liverpool are a team, and they have been for a long time, who dominate possession and have a lot of the ball.

"But they're not quite as good as Manchester City on the ball – there's more turnovers when they lose the ball. And opponents seem to find more space to attack Liverpool when they lose the ball, Luton didn't have the quality to punish Liverpool – apart from the goal they scored."

Carragher highlighted the Reds need to support Argentinian star Alexis Mac Allister in the middle as "he's not a DM", while he also suggest Klopp dip his feet into transfer market for another defender.

The Reds are currently third in the Premier League, but the gap to the top two could extended on Monday evening if Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea.
