Cricket fans were left astonished when a 'bonkers' type of wicket was given for the first time in international history at the Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews was controversially timed out against Bangladesh on Monday morning. Mathews was up to bat for Sri Lanka, but he had a problem with his helmet.

And Bangladesh decided to appeal when Mathews wasn't ready within two minutes to face his first ball. The umpire had no choice but to dismiss the batter, leaving Sri Lanka furious and fans baffled on social media.

"Bangladesh is quickly becoming the worst team in the world with regards to spirit of the game," one fan fumed. While a second shared: "So if he’d have faced just one ball without the helmet, he’d have been fine to ask for another one straight after that. Make it make sense!"

"Shameful lack of sportsmanship from Bangladesh," a third fumed. And another added: "Pathetic. Batsmen need to have right gear, especially a bouncer or a high pitched ball can be fatal!"

According to ICC laws: "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement.

"If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out." It was the first time that an individual has been timed out in international cricket in both the men's and the women's game.
