Brentford slap £100m price tag on Ivan Toney

Jamie Carragher has urged Mikel Arteta to ‘take a chance’ by bringing Ivan Toney to Arsenal in the January transfer window. The Gunners have long been credited with a desire to land Toney, who remains suspended until the new year but has been training with his Brentford team-mates since August.

Toney established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest strikers prior to his ban and could be a shrewd addition for Arsenal, who have been widely tipped to act on their reported interest in January. Carragher believes that although Toney would not be guaranteed to hit the ground running at the Emirates Stadium, he could give Arsenal their best chance of catching Manchester City at the top of the table.

“He’s a different type of striker, I’m a huge fan of his,” said Carragher while discussing Toney’s future on Monday Night Football. “Can he deal with the scrutiny when he goes a couple of games without a goal? There’s no doubt the quality is there but to take Arsenal to the title…

“I think Arsenal might need to take that chance, to be totally honest. If they don’t fix that position and the goalkeeping situation it will be very difficult for them to overhaul Manchester City.”

Arsenal have been without star striker Gabriel Jesus for much of the campaign to date, with the Brazilian forward having struggled to shake off injuries since the beginning of the season. The Gunners have scored five fewer goals than City in their opening 11 games and will be looking to step things up when the going gets tougher into the festive period and beyond.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will end up pursuing a move for Toney when January rolls around, with Brentford unlikely to consider selling him unless they can get a premium fee. The Bees are only willing to do business in the middle of the season in exchange for a nine-figure sum, according to Sky Sports, meaning that Arsenal will need to splash the cash in order to snap him up.
