Pochettino reviews Chelsea’s win over Tottenham

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has spoken out for the first time since Tottenham defender Cristian Romero was sent off for a shocking lunge during their feisty London derby on Monday night. The Argentinian was scythed down inside the penalty area and earned his team a spot-kick after a rash challenge from his compatriot Romero, and Fernandez has provided an update on his condition.

The 22-year-old was forced off with a knock early in the second half as Mauricio Pochettino brought on Mykhaylo Mudryk in his place.

That came as no surprise after the Argentinian sustained a heavy challenge to his shin from his international colleague Romero, who was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver for the tackle.

And Fernandez has issued an update on his fitness after he was taken off as the Blues wait to see if he will be fit their Premier League fixture with Manchester City on Sunday.

Posting a message on his official Instagram account, Fernandez wrote: “Thanks you for all your messages. I am good, working in my recovery to get to the weekend in the best way.”

The central midfielder has proved to be a pivotal player after sealing his £107million transfer from Benfica in January and has only missed one Premier League match – the 2-0 defeat to Brentford – since he joined after picking up a muscle injury.

Fernandez is yet to break his duck in the Premier League, although he did open his account with the winning goal in the 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup. But his leadership qualities and impressive passing range means he is one of the first names on Mauricio Pochettino’s teamsheet.
