Manchester United have been warned they have gone too far with their treatment of Jadon Sancho. Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend says he is surprised the PFA have not yet stepped in amid reports over the winger’s situation at Old Trafford.

Sancho hasn’t played a single minute for United since August. He was left out of the squad for the trip to Arsenal in September after failing to meet Erik ten Hag’s standards in training.

Ten Hag told the media his reasoning which led to an angry backlash from Sancho, who released a statement on his own via social media. The statement, which has now been deleted, told supporters to not “believe everything you read” and he claimed he has “been a scapegoat for a long time”.

Sancho has not even trained with his team-mates in the two months since. He looks set to leave the club in January, despite still having two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.

Latest reports from The Sun claim that Sancho has been booted out of the WhatsApp group that staff use to send key information to first-team players. Townsend was made aware of the development on talkSPORT on Monday.

He responded: “It’s gone daft, hasn’t it? I don’t agree with what Jadon Sancho has done, and I said that and I stand by that.

“But, I mean, crikey, you might as well say to the kid, ‘Don’t even come in’. It’s ridiculous.”

The Sun also claims that Sancho is not allowed to use any of the first-team facilities, including the canteen. The 23-year-old has to collect his food and take it to the academy section.
