Raheem Sterling could handed a ban after appearing to throw a missile into the crowd during Chelsea's win over Tottenham on Monday.

The incident occurred after Cole Palmer equalised from the penalty spot mid-way through the first half of the Blues' chaotic 4-1 over their London rivals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Footage from the side of the pitch, which was posted online by Chelsea's TikTok account, shows an object hitting Palmer on the leg after being thrown onto the pitch by Spurs supporters.

Then, as the players turn back towards the pitch, Sterling bends down and appears to throw the item back into the crowd before jogging back to the centre circle. The FA have opened an investigation and the incident is being reviewed.

If punished, Sterling could be handed a ban of up to three matches. Chelsea legend Didier Drogba was suspended for a hat-trick of games after throwing a coin back at Burnley fans in 2008 while Liverpool's Jamie Carragher received the same punishment for lobbing a coin at Arsenal supporters.

Richarlison, however, was handed a mere one-match ban after throwing a lit flare back into the Everton section of Goodison Park during the Toffees' win over Chelsea in 2022.

Sterling played a significant part in Chelsea's victory, which was their first over a 'top six' side since January 2022. He set up Nicolas Jackson's winner, had a goal ruled out by a VAR, and forced the foul which saw Destiny Udogie pick up a second yellow card and reduce the home side to nine men.

Spurs initially took the lead after Dejan Kulusevski's effort deflected in off Levi Colwill, and the Blues were lucky not to go two behind after Son Heung-min's goal was ruled out by VAR minutes later. Chelsea then had a couple of disallowed goals themselves before Palmer equalised from the penalty spot after officials sent Cristian Romero off for an ugly lunge on Enzo Fernandez in the box.
