Liverpool could be handed a major boost in their battle to retain the services of Mohamed Salah during the summer transfer window. The winger is the subject of significant interest from Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad, though the Middle Eastern outfit may be about to damage their chances of making the marquee signing.

The Saudi Pro League shook the summer transfer window ahead of the start of the season, forking out major fees on new signings in the hope of raising the profile of their competition and attracting fresh eyes to the league on a regular basis. Neymar, Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante were among those to be prised to Saudi Arabia as a result, with several other top Premier League players following suit.

Salah was among those targeted, with Al Ittihad desperate to make the Egyptian winger their marquee player. However, Liverpool promptly rebuffed their approaches and insisted that they would retain the services of the ex-Roma star for at least another season.

Jurgen Klopp publicly slammed the speculation as well, though fears are growing at Anfield that 2024 could see the situation pan out differently. Aged 31, it may prove difficult for Liverpool to reject a club-record bid given that his contract only runs until 2025.

However, Al Ittihad may be about to scupper their chances of signing Salah. The Saudi side recently parted ways with manager Nuno Espirito Santo following a poor run of form, and they are willing to splash the cash on a top-level replacement.

According to Sport, Jose Mourinho is among Al Ittihad’s key targets and they are growing hopeful that they can persuade the Portuguese boss to leave his position with Roma in favour of a lucrative project. The ex-Manchester United manager snubbed approaches made by Saudi Pro League outfits throughout the summer, though Al Ittihad will look to alter his stance.
