Alan Shearer believes Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is ‘unhappy’ and looks a far better player when he’s wearing an England shirt. Rashford has been unable to continue his incredible form from last season amid the Red Devils’ woes under Erik ten Hag.

Rashford has scored just one goal this term and a dismal campaign was compounded when he was sent off in the Champions League defeat by Copenhagen last week. The 26-year-old struck 30 goals last season in his best personal campaign to date.

It has not quite happened for Rashford this season, though. One of his best games came in England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy, in which he scored a thumping second-half strike in a 3-1 victory.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer believes Rashford looks a much better player when he’s featuring for England and seems ‘unhappy’ at Old Trafford. The Match of the Day pundit speculated that the forward has grown frustrated over the club’s poor recruitment.

“What we’re looking at is someone who clearly looks very unhappy. He looks moody and when that’s the case you’re never going to perform at your best,” Shearer told Optus Sport.

“Whether he feels he’s better than what’s at Old Trafford at this moment of time, I don’t know. Whether he feels let down by recruitment because he went to another level in terms of his goals last year, the club haven’t gone to it this season which maybe he wanted or expected it to.

“But you’re not seeing a happy footballer. You’re not seeing a happy person at this moment of time in Marcus Rashford. He looks a different player for England than he does for Manchester United.”

Under-pressure United boss Ten Hag admitted last week that he is ‘not happy’ with Rashford’s form. It comes with the Red Devils relying on Rashford to improve in a bid to salvage their campaign, having already lost nine times this season.
