A man has been arrested over the murder of Brighton & Hove Albion WFC centre-back Jorelyn Carabali’s brother. The arrest was made on Sunday with prosecutors confirming that the suspect has been remanded in custody pending a formal ongoing investigation.

The man being held has been named as Luis Felipe Ramirez Ocampo, also known as Pipe Pollo. Jorelyn’s brother Paulo Andres Carabali was shot dead on August 14 at a nightclub in Cali, Colombia.

He was shot six times by a man, who police say left the nightclub to look for a gun after a row broke out between the pair moments earlier. The suspect is said to have already got into an altercation with Paulo a year prior while police stated at the time that they think the murder may have been linked to Jorelyn’s brother’s alleged work as a loan shark.

Cali prosecution chief Sandra Eugenia Gonzalez Mina said on Sunday: “The suspected killer of the brother of our Colombian international footballer Jorelyn Carabali has been detained and sent to prison pending a formal ongoing investigation.

“Thanks to the work of police and prosecutors the identity of the man who allegedly assassinated Jorelyn’s brother has been established. The victim was shot six times, four in the face.

“The evidence gathered so far points to the alleged aggressor having a row in the disco that night with the victim as well as a year ago and leaving the nightclub to get a firearm before returning and shooting him.”

Jocelyn, who signed for Brighton in September from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro, revealed she was on a plane that was just about to take off when she found out about his murder. She told Colombian media in August: “We were five minutes away from take-off when I got a call from my brother’s girlfriend which I found strange.

“In the middle of her pain, she shouted: “They’ve killed Paulo. I was so stunned from the impact I didn’t understand at first what she was saying. She repeated it again and I threw the phone and began to scream. My brother’s killer came to the area he was in looking for an argument. My brother didn’t want problems because he was with his girlfriend and friends. His friends calmed him down at first but then he carried on with the row.

“There was a scuffle and the other man said he didn’t fight with his fists. He left and went to get a gun and came back and my brother’s girlfriend screamed, ‘Paulo, run.’ He did try to save his life but it was impossible. The only thing we want now is to see justice done.”
