Roma boss Jose Mourinho has taken aim at one of his former Chelsea players for diving during a heated derby draw with Lazio.

The Derby della Capitale finished goalless on Sunday in a match broken up by a series of confrontations between the two teams.

Eight yellow cards were shown in the derby, with Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri among those booked for showing dissent.

Mourinho hit out at Lazio star Pedro post-match, with the Roma boss claiming the veteran Spanish attacker had been looking for contact on numerous occasions.

‘Pedro is a fantastic player but he could also be a swimmer because the way he dives in the pool is fantastic,’ Mourinho told reporters.

His comments followed a heated Rome derby which saw eight yellows brandished in the draw

Pedro had been signed by Mourinho in the final season of his second spell in charge of Chelsea back in 2015.

The winger only played under Mourinho for five months, before the Portuguese coach was sacked after the Blues endured a miserable start to the Premier League season.

‘It was about everything, everything just wasn’t right. We were very low in the league, the spirits were very low, the trust was very low, everything was going wrong,’ Pedro later told the Telegraph following Mourinho’s sacking.

Mourinho and Pedro were briefly reunited when the former was appointed as Roma boss in 2021.

Pedro was omitted from Roma’s pre-season squad under Mourinho, leading to him to completing a move across the Italian capital to join arch-rivals Lazio.

He became the first player in 40 years to move between the two clubs.

‘At Roma I was experiencing a difficult situation from outside the squad. I hadn’t talked to the coach and managers. They told me I had to go away,’ Pedro said following his switch.

The latest derby ended in a 0-0 stalemate with Romelu Lukaku missing Roma’s best chance, while Bryan Cristante saw an effort ruled out for offside.

Lazio’s head coach Maurizio Sarri claimed post-match that he likes Mourinho, left, as a person

Luis Alberto also struck the post for Lazio during the first half.

The draw leaves Roma seventh in Serie A, with Mourinho’s side 13 points behind league leaders Inter Milan. Lazio are a point further back in tenth.

Sarri, who previously clashed with Mourinho during their time at Chelsea and Manchester United, suggested the relationship between the two has improved since their time in England.

‘I don’t like dealing with Mourinho the media character, but Mourinho the person is great,’ the former Chelsea boss said.
