Daniil Medvedev has shared his unusual retirement goal as he confessed that he wanted to try out another sport. Still only 27 years old, the Russian shouldn’t have to worry about his post-tennis career for several years but he has his sights set on becoming an amateur racing driver. And Medvedev already has his sights set on one particular competition, throwing up the idea of trying the Ferrari Challenge with some friends.

Medvedev has already reached the pinnacle of tennis – winning a Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open and reaching No 1 in the world last year. The 27-year-old still has plenty of life left in his playing career and has enjoyed one of his best season so far, showing that he isn’t going anywhere.

But that hasn’t stopped the 20-time title winner from thinking about the future, as he revealed that he had an outlandish retirement plan – becoming an amateur racing driver. The world No 3 was asked about his post-playing plans and the possibility of being a commentator or coach following his opening round-robin win at the ATP Finals on Monday but he appeared more eager to try another sport.

“I don’t know. I will have to try many things after my career to see what I like because I want to do something I like,” Medvedev said. “I think commentator could be something I can try. I don’t know if I’m going to like it. If I’m not going to like it, I’m going to say, Okay, I don’t do it. Same about coaching. I don’t know if I could be a good coach, but I would like to try it one day.”

While the Russian wasn’t certain about having a career in tennis after he finished playing, he was sure about one thing, turning to racing. He continued: “But what I for sure will try to do, depends how my life goes, but I will try to be an amateur racing driver.

“That’s my dream. For sure I cannot go professional anywhere. But some like Ferrari Challenge or whatever, where you pay money and you race throughout the whole year on the best tracks of the world, this I’m going to do with some of my friends.”

It’s not the first time Medvedev has shown an interest in racing after his career. The 27-year-old is a huge F1 fan, often watching races over other tennis matches, and drew comparisons to the sport when he donned a jacket with a black-and-white checkered pattern during his run to the Rome Masters title earlier this year.
