Carlos Sainz Jr. and Justin Thomas celebrated their Netflix Cup win a little too hard. As the duo stood on the podium, Sainz held the cup gingerly in his left hand while holding a large bottle of champagne in the other and accidentally smashed their newly acquired piece of silverware.

It appeared as if Sainz was trying to either get a better grasp of the trophy or rest it on his arm when it fell into the grass below. The crowd on hand gasped as the cup lay in pieces in front of a shocked Sainz, who could only put his hands on his head after seeing the destruction.

Meanwhile, all Thomas could do was laugh as his partner looked on in horror. It was an unfortunate end to a fun-filled event, which saw Sainz and Thomas beat off three other pairings to win.

Sainz and Thomas beat Pierre Gasly and Max Homa in the final. Homa and Gasly had defeated Alex Albon and Tony Finau, a late replacement for the injured Collin Morikawa, while Sainz and Thomas beat Lando Norris and Rickie Fowler in their first match.

Sainz’s embarrassing incident destroying the trophy instantly saw fans draw comparisons with his former McLaren teammate Norris, who accidentally smashed Max Verstappen’s trophy, worth around $45,000, after the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this season.

Norris smashed his champagne off a podium step and caused Verstappen’s porcelain vase, handmade over a period of nearly six months, to fall and smash into pieces. The Dutch star eventually got a replacement but it’s unclear what will happen with the destroyed Netflix Cup.

“Max just placed it too close to the edge. It fell over I guess. Not my problem, it’s his,” Norris said at the time.
