Bruno Fernandes dispelled suggestions linking him with a career move to Saudi Arabia after explaining he was ‘happy’ at Manchester United despite the club’s difficult run of form.

The Portuguese was handed the United captaincy in the summer after Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the armband in favour of handing it to Fernandes.

However, his time as skipper so far hasn’t gone to plan with the club struggling in both the English top-flight and the Champions League, while already having been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, a title they won last season.

Fernandes hasn’t been exempt from criticism at club level this season with his performances and leadership coming under intense scrutiny amidst United’s struggles.

Former players have cast doubt on his captaincy capabilities with ex-United captain Roy Keane furiously slating Fernandes after a poor performance and calling for him to be stripped of the club armband.

There have also been problems in finding a suitable midfield to accommodate Fernandes’ attacking prowess, with Ten Hag as yet unable to find balance in the middle of the pitch.

The Portuguese has at times been forced to play on the right-wing to give Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen more central roles and Fernandes will be hoping the international break has given Ten Hag time to find a solution to United’s midfield crisis.
